Lead Fishing Tackle Is Still a Problem for Common Loons takes a long look at the problem of poisoning in loons caused by lead fishing tackle. In Minnesota, we don't have the same extent of lead poisoning as in the northeastern states, but current statistics from necropsy of Minnesota loons shows a lead poisoning rate of 14.4%. This is an avoidable loss, just like the loss of bald eagles from use of lead ammo for deer hunting. There are nontoxic jigs and sinkers available from Minnesota manufacturers, but the problem needs more awareness among anglers, and the solutions need much more advocacy. (June 2018)
